A Whiteboard animation is a video that shows a human hand, and a ‘sharpie’ pen draw the content on the screen as the video plays.
These were really popular a few years ago and I think they got overused and there popularity waned a bit.
However, a whiteboard animation can still be really powerful if used correctly.
They are great for explainer videos as they build with the story to keep the interest of the viewer. Even if you use only text in your whiteboard video to see the hand right out the text word-by-word really helps get the message into your viewer brain. And there is scientific evidence to back up why this works.
It is called Mayer’s Signaling Principle, which states “people learn better when cues that highlight the organisation of the essential material are added.”
